John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1893Entry/Object ID
2004.008.0266Description
John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1893, with a title page that says "Excelsior Diary Columbian Edition 1893." It was presented to Mr. Dent by Dr. St. Clair, his brother-in-law, "with affectionate regard.". This diary is a combination of an account book and daily notes. The entries are in lead pencil. This is a dark red leather book, the same on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around over the front. The corners of the flap are curved. There is an accordion pocket at the front and back of this book and a loop for a writing implement. All edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. Most of the cash account pages were not used, although a few were used for miscellaneous notes. On December 20, Mr. Dent married Lucy Chandler of Montross, Virginia over the objections of his children, which he thought were for selfish reasons. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 32nd diary filmed.Collection
