Description

John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1895, with a title page that says "Excelsior Diary 1895." This diary is a combination of an account book and daily notes. The entries are in lead pencil. The quality of Mr. Dent's handwriting has declined markedly. This is a dark red leather book, golden brown on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around over the front. The corners of the flap are curved. There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book and a loop for a writing implement. All edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. Most of the cash account pages were not used, although a few were used for miscellaneous notes. Three pages are devoted to a list of visitors. Marshall and Ida's son Arthur died on January 2 and was buried the next day. Mr. Dent was very ill for 8 weeks during the summer. He and his family went to the Exposition in Atlanta in November. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 34th diary filmed.
