Description

John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1897, with a title page that says "1897 The Excelsior Diary." This diary is a combination of an account book and daily notes. The entries are in lead pencil. The quality of Mr. Dent's handwriting has declined markedly. This is a black leather book, dark red on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around over the front. The corners of the flap are curved. There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book and a loop for a writing implement. All edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. Most of the cash account pages were not used, although a few were used for miscellaneous notes. The final entry is for December 23. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 36th diary filmed.
