Scope and Content

8 folders ; 8 3/4" x 11 7/8" and 1 folder ; 9 3/4" x 14 3/4" Bernard Ignatius Johnson, born in 1927, was the second son of J. Julius Johnson and Lillian Mattingly Johnson. The family farmed in Bushwood and eventually the elder Mr. Johnson was the county extension agent for many years. Bernard was educated in parish schools, St. Mary's Academy, and the University of Maryland. He served in the Army from 1946-1947 and again during the Korean Conflict. He began his teaching career in 1954. He was always active in teacher organizations and eventually rose to statewide office in the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals. He was a principal at Esperanza Middle School and then at Chopticon High School from 1977-1978. He was active in the outdoor theater movement in the 1970s and 1980s. The material at the Society has been brought in by various people over the years. Mr. Johnson did not have a plan for his personal effects when he died, so boxes of papers were auctioned off. Some of the buyers eventually brought things to the Society that they did not want. There are birth records, school records, military service records, clippings about Mr. Johnson's career, a little about his travels, and some material about his professional career. The coverage is spotty. We always hope for more material to appear.
