Description

1 copy book 9 5/8"h x 7 1/2"w x 5/16"d with a black leatherette spine and corner protectors and a brown and pink marbled front and back cover. The interior paper probably was cream colored in the beginning, but is a light toast now. On the inside front cover is pasted a calendar for 1856. The pages in the book are not numbered. The quality and legibility of the ink varies. Each page is completely filled. The final entry is for December 1920, followed by 15 blank pages. Rose Stettinius Gray was the wife of Reverend John B. Gray, rector of Trinity Church in St. Mary's City from 1882-1885. The Grays began married life in Trappe, Maryland on the eastern shore. At some point, they were in Los Angeles, California and owned a home there, and also were in Birmingham, Alabama. The couple had two living children, a boy and a girl. Their home in St. Mary's was down Rosecroft Road, so in bad weather it was not easy to get to the church. Reverend Gray was also responsible for the chapel of ease on Three Notch Road, which was a considerable burden. Bad weather, illnesses, visitors, and Reverend Gray's many trips away were often in the diary. Grandparents lived with them most of the time. In December 1885, the Grays left St. Mary's for a parish in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Gray wrote only occasionally after that. Her husband suffered a stroke in August 1895, but lived for several years. They made their home with their married daughter. The diary was transcribed by Gale Burwell and published in the Chronicles of St. Mary's in Vol. 41, no. 3 (Fall 1993)
