Key family chest of drawersEntry/Object ID
2007.003.0001Description
The chest of drawers is very dark brown with red overtones. It is quite ornate, with many curved surfaces. It would appear that little expense was spared.
This description is from the point of view of someone standing in front of the piece and looking at it. From the top down:
The mirror is 29" tall and 20" wide. It is supported on two block and spindle posts with an acorn finial on each post. Flower shaped handles on the center side of each post allow the mirror to be rotated as necessary. The frame around the mirror is convex, with a pillow effect. 7 pieces form the top of the frame, 12 pieces form the right, 4 pieces form the bottom, and 8 pieces form the left edge. The entire mirror assembly is on its own support, slightly raised above the soon-to-be-described drawers.
The next level of the piece is a set of small drawers that sits on the "top" of the chest. The fronts of the drawers curve outward. There are three drawers that are side by side. The one on the left is 11 1/8" wide and 4 1/2" tall, the center drawer is 20 1/2" wide, and the left drawer is 11 3/8" wide. There is a single drawer pull on each of the smaller drawers and two drawer pulls on the center drawer. There is a chip out of the wood veneer at the top edge of the right hand drawer.
The top of the chest has a bull nose edge on the front. There is a large raised drip of something just to the left of center on the top. The flat space back to the three drawers is 12 3/4" deep.
Immediately below the top on each side is a solid block 9" high and 3 3/8" wide. Between the blocks are two drawers, side by side, that are 6" high and 19" wide. Each drawer has a single drawer pull and each drawer has a keyhole and a locking mechanism. [No key is available]
Below the blocks on each side is a 25 5/8" free standing pillar with a Corinthian capital. The columns are not grooved. Between the pillars are three 38" wide drawers, 6 1/2" high on top, 7 1/2" high in the middle, and 8" high on the bottom. Each of these drawers has two drawer pulls and a keyhole with lock mechanism.
Below the columns is another block that is 3 1/2" tall and 3 7/8" wide. Between the two blocks, across the face of the chest, is a 4 7/8" tall concave piece of wood.
In the front, the chest is supported by 7 1/2" tall animal feet with carefully carved toenails. In the back, the two corners are supported by large pillow or ball feet.
The side of the chest has an inset panel that is in about the same position as the three large drawers. There is no decoration on the side.Collection
