Description

12 ¾"h x 8"w x 1"d This is a light brown buckram bound book with dark maroon corners, covering July--September 1912. A banner in the center of the front cover says "Ledger" in black ink. There are four 3" demarcations on the spine without text. At the bottom of the spine is a ½" space with "S. E. 300" in black ink in that space. That is probably the style number of the ledger. The front cover has a border of two very narrow back lines, angled to account for the corner decoration. Inside the lines is a border of less than ¼" black half circles. A black line of oval links marks out a rectangle 9 ¼"h x 3"w centered on the cover. From each corner of the rectangle is a line of the same links leading to the corner of the half circle border. On the interior edge of each maroon corner is a row or tiny linked stars. The back cover is the same, but without the Ledger banner. Cover P. 2 is plain except for a penciled "MG [over] 100" in the upper left corner. The front flyleaf has "July 16, 1912 Leonardtown Bank of the Eastern Shore Co." handwritten in black ink near the top. The back flyleaf and Cover P. 3 are blank. There are the usual alphabetical tabs at the beginning of the book, followed by 276 numbered blue lined, eight columned pages. There are entries in the alpha tabs. Between tabs B and C is a ditto typed sheet listing the names and numbers of shares of early owners of bank stock. This sheet is not as complete as the list on pp. 30-31. The handwriting throughout the book is somewhat difficult. P. 1-29=One person per page showing the number of shares each purchased at $100/share. Those who purchased $100 worth were on the Board of Directors. P. 30-31 Handwritten list in ink and pencil of early stock purchasers with name, number of shares, and dollar amount. Dates are not included. B. Pilchard P. 273=Meeting on July 22, 1912, a "special meeting" of a few directors, functioning as an executive committee. The group asked S.M. Jones to be the bank's cashier. He promised an answer to the offer at least by the August meeting. The President authorized George Joy to survey the lot to be bought from J. J. [illegible, may be Norris] on which to build the bank. A building committee of J.P. Greenwell, Joseph B. Drury and [completely illegible] was authorized to look at bids, choose the contractor, and report to the August meeting. P. 274=Meeting of the Board of Directors on July 15, 1912. The Board elected its officers, selected a discount committee, and a temporary treasurer. The group authorized its president, C. V. Hayden, to develop stock certificates. The entire group planned to visit the parent institution in Cambridge. S. M. Jones was chosen as secretary. P. 275=Meeting of bank stockholders. Sixty-eight of the seventy-three shares were represented in person or by proxy. A temporary chair and secretary helped the group elect the Board of Directors: Dr. C. V. Hayden, Jos. S. Matthews, J.P. Greenwell, Stephen M. Jones, and Joseph B. Drury. The meeting adjourned. It is apparent that the progression of meetings was from P. 275 back to P. 273.
