This is an enlarged copy of an old photograph. T. Lee Mattingly taught all grades at the Leonardtown School, District 3, School no. 1. This picture was taken April 25, 1906. There are thirty-nine pupils present. The building behind the students appears to be a two room building--there are two chimneys and two wings on either side of the front porch. There is a door with shutters and two large windows with shutters just visible under the porch roof and each wing has two large six over six light windows with dark shutters. The building has a hip roof with shingles. The cupola for the school bell is just visible above the porch gable. There is some attractive "gingerbread" on the porch roof and columns. The trees are just beginning to leaf, so it must have been a cool spring. Many of the children look none too clean, but that may be the fault of blotches on the original photograph.
