Entry/Object ID

Scope and Content

1 sheet ; 7 7/8" h x 12 1/2" w This is buff paper. In this letter, written in pencil, George Hayden wrote to his mother from New Market, Virginia on January 9, 1863. He said New Market was about 43 miles from Staunton. Sadly, several of the lines of the letter are illegible because they are on fold lines. The troops had done a lot of marching around to little purpose. The army did not have winter shelter or proper equipment for cold weather, but he did not complain. Hayden believed the war was going well for the Confederacy. He reminisced about home and asked to be remembered to many people. He complained politely about not receiving letters from home. A transcription of the letter is included.
