Entry/Object ID

Scope and Content

1 sheet ; 9 1/2" h x 15 1/2" w This is pale cream paper with pale blue lines and a small cartouche in the upper left corner. In this letter, written in pencil, George Hayden addressed his mother from near Harrisonburg, Virginia on May 21, 1863. Mr. Hayden said he had not written more often because he was not sure the letters would get there and because he feared causing difficulty for those at home if they received mail from the Confederacy. He thought the people of Maryland should live quietly and not give cause to be exiled. He was grieved by the loss of Katherine Burch, one of his favorite relatives. He took heart from the defeat of the Union at Fredericksburg. The Maryland Line had fought in a small battle with considerable losses. He was grateful for letters received, but cautioned his mother not to send packages, especially with money, through the mail, but to send them via a traveling friend. A transcription of the letter is included.
