This is pale cream paper with pale blue lines and a small cartouche in the upper left corner. In this letter, written in pencil, George Hayden addressed his mother from Lacy Springs, Virginia on Good Friday, 1863. He said he had not had a letter from home for over two months. He had received paper and socks via a family friend. He learned of another package that he had not received at all. He felt well and the troops were well, despite several feet of snow and no proper shelter. He spent several paragraphs saying how much he missed going to church, but he still was imbued with the cause and felt he had done the right thing. His battalion served by guarding the Shenandoah Valley from federal incursions; it had just missed a small battle nearby. He asked to be remembered to family and friends and said he wished for letters--he had written his sister three times with no response. A transcription of the letter is included.Collection
