Letter from Hope to Erie D. MellorEntry/Object ID
2014.013.0180Description
This is a letter Hope wrote to Erie talking about her first Guyther ancestor to arrive in North America, Capt. Nicholas Guyther. She mentions that she is trying to find out who his parent's were and his place of birth. She says that she stayed in England for three months fifteen years mostly to research her father's side of the family the Pickersgill-Cunliffe family. Hope says she found only a single reference in the National Library (Brit.) and it was of a man named Compton Guyther. Compton and his crew had been taken with his crew in chains to be tried as pirates but they were all acquitted because Compton had letters of marque from the king. He was also recorded in the official archives of Maryland as having brought an indentured slave over from Wales in the 1660s. She ends the letter saying that if Erie has any questions to just ask her.
I'm including a library slip that was issued to Hope so she could look at a book titled "Gwydir Chapel, Llanrwst" by J. Jones.Collection
