Description

This is a three page letter J. Marshall Dent wrote to his son Elliot on September 23rd of a mostly unknown year. The stamp on the front of the envelope shows his father sent this from Oakley, Maryland on September 23rd but for the year only the numbers 190 are visible enough to see. His father sent the letter to an address at 1009, 1011, 13th St. N. W in Washington, D.C.. J. Marshall at first talks about all the rain they have been getting in Oakley and how bad the rain is for the fodder in the field. Next his muses about how he wasn't sure whether any of his kids would make it down for a wedding. Who the wedding is for is not noted by it was to happen somewhere in Mechanicsville at 10 A.M.. J. Marshall then talks about a young new teacher named Mr. Alvey teaching at River Springs and that he's the son of Jim Alvey of Charlotte Hall. He ends the letter with some woes about not being sure if there's enough money to get a young girl named Louise new clothes for school. He signs off with "Affectionately, Popa".
