2021.002.0001Description
13"h x 8"w brown ledger. The book used to have brown leather corners and spine. The spine is cracked and worn and the corners are all but gone. The beige paper cover on cardboard has an all over design of half inch eight lobed flowers, front and back. There is a coffee cup stain on the lower half of the front cover. The ledger will have a scanned use copy because it is quite frail. The names of people and property will be captured from the scan.
This is the tax assessment book for 1804, carefully prepared by ?. The book is arranged by hundreds, starting from the north part of the county, Upper Resurrection, and ending with St. Michael's. Within each hundred, the tax payers are arranged alphabetically by surname. The pages are numbered in pairs, so there are two leaves for each number. Across the top of a pair of pages is the usual division of property: name of land, number of acres, price per acre, value of land, male and female slaves under 8, value, male and female slaves 8-14, value, males from 14-45, value, females from 14-36, value, males above 45 and females above 36, value, ounces of plate, value, value of other property [furniture, feather beds, carriages, etc.], Total. At the bottom of the right hand page, the person kept a running total of each column, so on the final page for a hundred, the totals were easy to see. A summary of all the entries is on p. 91. P. 92 shows the rules for assessment and lists the assessors for the several districts. On May 8, 1804, the assessors presented their results and their invoices for time spent. From p. 95 to 108, changes to taxable property in 1805 were recorded, with a summary on p. 109 and a statement of the 1805 tax rate. The few remaining pages of the ledger were empty.Collection
