The information was in the 1977 edition of Regina Hammett's book "History of St. Mary's County Maryland." Page 55 and half of page 56 explain the position and duties of county sheriff before the American Revolution, with a list of those appointed from 1637-1775. On page 437, Mrs. Hammett explained that the 1776 Constitution for the State Of Maryland changed the office of sheriff to an elected position. Thereafter follows a list of the men elected and their year of election, this information ending near the bottom of page 438.Collection
