Name/Title
Little Red Schoolhouse as an Amish or Mennonite schoolEntry/Object ID
2014.009.0134Description
10"h x 8"w black and white photo on heavy paper of the Little Red Schoolhouse in probably the 1950s. The building had dark [red?] shingles and there was an entry alcove and at least one more classroom added to make an L. There were Amish or Mennonite boys and a girl in the yard, so that may have been the school's population at the time. The original building and the addition had a gable roof. There was a chimney in the center of each peak. The entry roof was a foot or so lower than that of the main building. In the entryway, there was a center door and a four over four double hung window on each side of the door. On the long wall of the schoolhouse were two four over four double hung windows, one of which was partly open. On the long wall of the addition there were three four over four double hung windows in a single group. All the windows were open. A light colored sedan was parked in front of the building. The boy in the foreground had on a straw hat, white shirt, dark suspenders, long black pants, and was barefoot. The indistinct girl behind him had on a dark dress and white bonnet. The other figure that I think was a boy had on dark shorter trousers.
