Description

4"h x 5 3/8"w black and white photo of a photo of an old house at Locust Grove. The house was torn down and replaced by a much grander home in 1898 or so. J. Allan Coad owned the original photo and allowed Mr. Fenwick to copy it. This copy showed all the edges of the photo with text on three of them. The main building was a story and a half stuccoed building with a cedar shake hipped gable roof. The roof was in very poor repair. The photo was of the long side of the building. There were three gable roofed dormers in the roof; the visible one on the left was narrower than the center one. The right dormer was obscured by trees. On the left side of the main building was a single story addition with a cedar shake roof with a large white chimney rising through the roof near the main building. There was a dentil vergeboard on the eaves of the addition, but not the main building. There was a single four over four narrow window centered in the wall of the addition. In the main building, there were two six over six windows with dark shutters, a center entry door with an eight light window, and two more six over six windows with shutters on the right. The right most window had its shutters closed tight. There was probably a chimney on the right gable end, but it was obscured by trees. There was a three bar fence between the house and the road. A man, identified as Lewis Cornelius Combs, was standing next to the center door. On the top "frame" of the photo was written, "Mr. L. C. Combs standing by hall door." On the right "frame" of the photo was written, "Torn down about 1900." On the bottom "frame" of the photo was written, "Old house at Locust Grove." ******************************************* Text on verso: none on accompanying sheet "Lewis Cornelius Combs standing by hall door of the old house at Locust Grove which was torn down about 1899. Locust Grove in second district and originally called McKay's Neck. Purchased of Richard McKay by Joseph Coad March 24, 1789. Inherited by the children of Lewis Cornelius Combs who married Mary Coad daughter of Colonel William Coad. William Coad was a son of Joseph Coad. Original in possession of J. Allan Coad."
