Scope and Content

1 folder ; 11 3/4" x 9 5/8" This folder has various financial records, mostly for Lewis Graves. 1. No date Small lined sheet with a list of household effects and a gray mare. At the top it says, "Lucy Graves to Z. [or L.]Graves," with a total value of $18.75. On the verso it says, "Z. Graves to J. T. Graves." 2. No date Pages 4-[7] of Lewis Graves store account. Sadly, there is no indication of which store. Several people appear to have been authorized to charge to the account. The record indicates one price for an item, but usually a different price was charged and totaled. On the last page there is lots of figuring for what may have been a construction project. "Butter's work" may refer to William Butter. 3. December 2, 1837 Receipt given to Bettie Booth by Loker, Abell, and Edelen. 4. October 25, 1844 Receipt given to Lewis Graves by R. Colton. On the verso are the details of a division of $8.90 between Lewis Graves, Joseph Saxton, and Thomas W. Morgan. 5. December 27, 1847 Promissory note by Lewis Graves to James J. Gough for $11.44 plus interest. The total amount is figured on the reverse. Graves paid in full on October 4, 1848 and his original signature was torn off to show the note was paid. Scanned as an example. 6. January 1, 1849 Lewis Graves and Charles Morgan promised to pay $4.12 to the Trustees of St. Joseph's Congregation 7. November 19, 1849 Lewis Graves bought salt and postage from James Biscoe 8. May 4, 1853 Captain Paul bought a barrel of plaster for Lewis Graves while the captain was in Baltimore. 9. May 4, 1853 Captain Paul bought [illegible] for Lewis Graves 9A. Copy of the Baltimore American Prices Current for the week ending June 15, 1860. In very tiny print on two sides of a 12"h x 9 3/8"w very thin sheet were the prices and general traffic in many commodities such as beeswax, coffee, cotton, various metals, naval stores, bacon, butter, tobacco, cattle, etc. There is a column and a half devoted to wholesale prices for many of the same items. It is very interesting. This piece is in a folder in Box 2 of the Collection. 10. May 31, 1864 [should be 1863, I think] Lewis Graves borrowed $500 from Margaret E. Russell. The verso notes three times when Graves made payments. There are several revenue stamps on the piece. 11. March 26, 1865 Receipt for Lewis Graves from Margaret Russell for Graves' payment against a note she held. 12. August 8, 1865 Small receipt given to Lewis Graves by Margaret E. Russell. Graves had given her $10 "a part of the interest on a note I hold against him." 13. October 2, 1865 Same transaction, different day 14. August 16, 1866 Graves paid off the interest for 1865 15. November 17, 1866 Receipt from the Herbert store for payment by Lewis Graves 16. September 2, 1867 Lewis is Graves paid Margaret Russell all the interest for 1866 17. May 25, 1868 Ellen E. Graves promised to pay Ann P. Higgs $59.17 plus interest. There are notes of several payments and lots of figuring of interest. 17A. September 26, 1868 To be fair, the year is only a guess. The stamp was first issued on August 19, 1861. Mr. Lewis Graves received an envelope from Adams & Davidson, wholesale grocers, etc. in Baltimore. 18. Fall 1869 Lewis Graves' account with Adams [illegible] Co. in Baltimore. The only legible words are the dates and a large PAID written across the paper. 19. 1868-1969 advertisement with buyer testimonials for phosphate of lime. The product was carried by Herbert & Hairston in Baltimore and locally by V. Camalier in Leonardtown.
