Scope and Content

1 newspaper ; 17 3/4" x 11" This folder has four issues of old newspapers we couldn't bear to throw away. August 20, 1773 issue of the Maryland Journal, published in Baltimore by William Goddard, who also did printing of forms and hand bills. The front page has been largely torn away. Judging by the language in the remaining part of the page, this may have been the first issue of the paper. There is a list of commodity prices, a letter in favor of tithes for the support of the clergy, several advertisements for goods and services, advertisements for the return of runaways, a list of letters waiting at the post office, and a long advertisement by George Washington for land available on the Ohio and Kanawa Rivers. January 30, 1862 Vol. XVIII, no. 5 of the St. Mary's Beacon of four pages. There was some war news and many advertisements for shops and other businesses, including doctors and a dentist. Tax collectors for the several districts warned of deadlines for payment. St. Mary's Seminary had an advertisement for the upcoming annual session. February 25, 1864 Vol. 1, no. 22 of the St. Mary's Gazette, published by Walter Thompson. There is a front page and its verso only. On the front page, there was reprinted an address by Jefferson Davis exhorting the Confederate troops and an article about the Army's plans for the spring. There was also an ad for White Hall Academy for young ladies. On the verso were several sheriff's sale of real and personal property and slaves. There was also a notice from a Washington, D.C. lawyer regarding compensation for slave losses. October 8, 1937 Vol. 1, no.1 of The News, which billed itself as the "only Republican weekly in St. Mary's County." A. Kingsley Love was the publisher, as indicated by the many congratulatory letters on the front page. Paul Bailey was the vice-president and Joseph D. Wiener was the managing editor. There were the usual local notes, a few low key advertisements and many small articles lifted from other papers. The serial, "Black Feather," took up most of the back page.
