1 folder ; 11 3/4" x 9 5/8"
This folder has two oaths of allegiance taken by Lewis and Joseph E. Graves when they returned to Maryland from fighting in the Confederate Army. Soldiers signed the oath to regain civil rights.
Apparently there were Union officers who traveled around Maryland, setting up shop at local gathering points, such as stores, to get the signatures of returning soldiers. The oath was clumsily printed on half a sheet of blue lined paper and was administered by First Lt. H. H. Hakes of Company B of the 8th Illinois Cavalry.
