Scope and Content

1 folder ; 11 3/4" x 9 5/8" This folder has a few personal letters on various topics. 1. No date Ellen wrote to Bettie to tell her all that had happened since Bettie's last visit. A baby was born, another child drank a sleeping potion by mistake, a child named Willie died of the measles, and a sewing machine had been added to the household. Ellen lived at Forest Landing. An attempt at a transcription is included. 2. December 23, 1880 Sister Mary Barbara of St. Joseph's Hospital wrote to thank her friends for the gift of a calf. She and other sisters collaborated on gifts for little Blanche, a cap and a doll. She sent special wishes to Alice Graves. An attempt at a transcription is included. 3. September 28, 1886 Letter from Bishop H. P. Northrup, Bishop of Charleston to Reverend Father A. P. Keating thanking the members of the St. Joseph Sanctuary Society for $50. It sounds as if Northrup had been in the county at some time. Keating put a note at the bottom of the letter asking Miss Fannie Mattingly to save the letter among the sanctuary relics. 4. May 2, 1887 Letter from Oscar J. Coskery in Baltimore to Hayden M. H. Yates with advice about how to treat his wife [unnamed] until she could get to St. Joseph's Hospital, "but fear I can promise little." An attempt at a transcription is included. 5. June 19, 1915 Note from A. Smith to B. Love. Mr. Smith declined to come to day camp because the schools benefitted from whiskey revenue. An attempt at a transcription is included. 6. May 8, 1937 Letter to Emma Graves from Mamie ? sending Ms. Graves something Mamie found that had to do with the Sanctuary society. 7. April 14, 1941 May G. Love wrote the Rector of Georgetown College offering the records of the St. Joseph's Sanctuary Society that were found among Emma Graves effects. The Rector took all of Father Keating's letters, but did not want the rest, which must be why the Society has them. An attempt at a transcription is included.
