Scope and Content

1 folder ; 14 3/4" x 9 5/8" This folder has Lewis Graves' records for tobacco sales with various Baltimore merchants, James Biscoe & Co. and Biscoe & Langley being the most frequently named. Cash was sent to Mr. Graves in carefully folded packets entrusted to steamer captains. 1. June 4, no year Biscoe & Langley sent out in letter form what would later be the farm report on the radio: recent prices for commodities in various locations. An attempt at a transcription is included. 2. May 11-June 6, 1830 James Biscoe sold one hogshead of tobacco for $65.24. With freight and commission deducted from that, $63.74 was left. Mr. Biscoe included a long note about tobacco quality and prices. After the proceeds paid Mr. Graves' bills, $13.75 was sent with Capt. Foxwell. [in Box 2] 3. July 30, 1830 Mr. Biscoe sold another hogshead for $55. He sent Mr. Graves another long note about tobacco and prices and hoped that bad weather in England would mean good prices for wheat exports. [in Box 2] 4. September 26, 1830 Mr. Biscoe sold another hogshead and 30 bushels of wheat. He sent another long note about accounting and the prices of commodities. Capt. Foxwell carried nearly $70 down the Bay. [in Box 2] 5. December 30, 1830 James Biscoe sent a long note explaining why the company would not sell Mr. Graves' hogshead of tobacco anytime soon. An attempt at a transcription is included. [in Box 2] 6. May 31, 1832 Running account for Lewis Graves with James Biscoe & Co. Biscoe wrongly charged Graves for a shipment of guano that had been sent to John T. Graves and the error was corrected. 7. June 20, 1843 Biscoe & Co. sold one hogshead for an improved price over previous years. After the bills were paid, Captain Foxwell took $49 for Mr. Graves. 8. January 6, 1843 Mr. Graves sold 2 hogsheads with a different company, I think A. Penn. Ignatius Pike signed the note. Mr. Graves was owed about $62, but the packet was mailed rather than sent with Captain Foxwell; it is not clear if money were enclosed. 9. August 3, 1847 James Biscoe & Co. sold one hogshead for Mr. Graves for almost nothing. Graves cannot have been pleased. 10. August 19, 1847 Note from Biscoe & Co. explaining recent tobacco transactions and what to expect from Captain Foxwell. 11. August 28, 1847 In florid handwriting, Mr. Graves was informed that three hogsheads were sold by someone with a completely illegible signature on behalf of James Biscoe. John Abell, also with the firm, sent the obligatory note about prices. Captain Foxwell carried $80 to Mr. Graves. [in Box 2] 12. December 30, 1847 92 bushels of oats were sold for Mr. Graves by that illegible signatory. On the next pages was a long account of Mr. Graves' transactions during the year. Captain Long carried $26 to Mr.Graves. [in Box 2] 13. September 15, 1848 Biscoe & Langley sold both wheat and corn for Mr. Graves. Captain Foxwell brought $85 to Mr. Graves. Scanned as an example. 14. December 15, 1848 One hogshead of tobacco was sold so that Captain Foxwell could bring Mr. Graves $29. 15. June 9, 1849 James Biscoe sold two hogsheads for Lewis Graves. The Dutch ports were blockaded, so the market was unsettled. 16. September 14, 1849 Two hogsheads of tobacco were sold, but Mr. Graves was lectured about the quality of his leaf. Captain Foxwell brought $80 to Mr. Graves. This letter has been damaged by iron gall ink.
