Scope and Content

1 folder ; 14 3/4" x 9 5/8" This folder has many of Lewis Graves' records for tobacco sales with various Baltimore merchants, Neale, Harris & Co. most often. Cash was sent to Mr. Graves in carefully folded packets entrusted to steamer captains. There are also records of transactions within the county and with other people. 1. Envelope front for Lewis Graves via the steamer St. Nicholas 2. No discernible date In illegible florid handwriting, I think Neale, Harris & Co. sold wheat for Lewis Graves. The company claimed poor quality depressed the price. 3. May 21, 1843 This may have been either a freight bill or a bill for prizing Ann Graves' tobacco. 4. May 20, 1850 The tobacco Graves sent was being held for better prices. Neale, Harris & Co. sent lots of information about the state of the market for tobacco and other commodities. 5. June 25, 1851 An account of Mr. Graves transactions with James Biscoe & Co. for the first half of 1851. Mr. Biscoe encouraged Graves to send his wheat as soon as possible to catch the good market. Captain Foxwell took about $18 to Mr. Graves. [in Box 2] 6. May 3, 1853 P. B. Welch sold one hogshead for Mr. Graves. The sample had one bad leaf, so that depressed the price. Captain Paul brought about $39 down the Bay. This has been scanned as an example. 7. December 17, 1856 Neale, Harris & Co. received two hogsheads of tobacco, but warned Lewis Graves they might have to hold them for a better price. 8. March 27, 1857 The handwriting is very difficult, but I think Neale & Harris were telling Lewis Graves that he cleared $97 on an illegible number of hogsheads. There are nice drawings on the statement. 9. March 27, 1857 On a pale blue sheet, a statement tobacco and wheat sales, guano purchases, cash paid to others, and general merchandise sales. Mr. Graves was sent a check on the Farmers & Merchants Bank for $154.30 10. June 8, 1857 Neale, Harris & Co. took a long time to explain they were holding Graves' most recent shipment for a better price. 11. December 9, 1857 In impossible handwriting, Neale & Harris reported wheat and tobacco sales of over $700, but purchases and expenses meant $72 for Lewis Graves. 12. March 22, 1858 This may say that Graves bought clover seed. 13. April 1858 The first form letter. The legislature had set up a corps of grain inspectors who would take the place of merchants such as Neale, Harris & Co. by examining each grain shipment and negotiating the price with buyers. The letter encouraged sellers to opt out of the inspection process and continue to rely on Neale, Harris & Co. by signing the form included. 14. April 24, 1858 Neale & Harris filled Lewis Graves' order for guano and flour, hopefully not in the same container. It was shipped on the Dorchester. 15. October 8, 1858 Lewis Graves account with Neale & Harris in Baltimore. 14 bags of guano were to be shipped on the schooner Mary Elizabeth. 16. November 29, 1858 Lewis Graves sent five hogsheads to Neale, Harris & Co. which they expected to sell soon. 17. May 27, 1862 Leonard T. Booth sold a hogshead of tobacco and bought 3 bags of guano. The name of the merchant has been cut away; it may be Thomas Reeder. 18. September 23, 1863 Graves bought guano and a barrel of whiskey from Adams & Davidson in Baltimore. 19. April 10, 1869 W. A. Padgett sold tobacco for Lewis Graves 20. September 28, 1869 Adams & Bowen tried to ship Graves' order, but missed the boat the first time. 21. September 17, 1872 J.T.M. Raley and George H. Morgan sold tobacco, corn, wheat, and oats for L. Ford Graves. An attempt at a transcription is included. 22. January 13, 1874 L. Ford Graves sold animals, household goods and farm equipment to John M. Lloyd & Co. to settle a bill of $300. A transcription is included. 23. September 22, 1874 Alexander Higgs sold Ellen E. Graves half of his tobacco, all of his corn, and some wheat straw. A transcription is included. 24. October 8, 1880 John T. Graves sold Lewis B. Graves a colt for $22. 25. September 17, 1888 J. E. Graves sold Zachary Johnson four hogsheads for $4. 26. September 15, 1890 C. S. Johnson sold Sen Graves a Pennsylvania grain drill. 27. April 22, 1899 Ellen E. Graves bought a heifer from Mrs. R. C. Downs for $30.
