Description

Sepia-tone print on board 6 1/2" h x 4 3/16"w of Luke Matthews. Mr. Matthews is seated on a "stone" wall in the photographer's studio with his torso facing to his left, but his head and eyes turned to the right. He is holding a bamboo walking stick in his right hand and a bowler hat is supported on his knee by his left hand. He has probably brown hair, receding a bit, mutton-chops, and a mustache. His suit coat has small lapels, close to his collar with the edges bound in a contrasting color. There are four buttons on the coat and then it swoops away toward the back. There are pockets in the coat that are trimmed with the same contrasting material as the collar. The trousers may be a slightly different color. The collar on his shirt is high and overlaps slightly and he has a small shiny tie. There is a spray of artificial flowers intruding into the picture on his left. Text on the band at the bottom of the photo: "Casseday & Co. Baltimore." ******************************************* Text on the verso: "Luke Matthews. Photographic Art Studios. Excelsior. No. 20 North Charles St., Elite. No. 66 Lexington St. near Charles, Monumental. 120 & 122 Lexington St. cor. Park. All sittings by the instantaneous method." This piece was loose in the back of the dark red photograph album.
