Description

3 1/2"h x 5"w black and white photo of Woodly, Dr. James Thomas Notley Maddox's farm in Washington County, Maryland. In this view, Woodly was a two story house, likely stuccoed. The main building was on the far left with a gable roof, an inside end chimney on the left, two nine over six windows on the second floor and a door and window on the first floor. There was a three bay shed roof porch that ran the full length of the main house on the first floor. An addition, not quite as tall as the main building, was on the right gable end. The addition had a smaller inside end chimney on its own gable end. A modern shingle roof was on both parts of the building. On the long side of the addition, there were two six over six windows on the second floor, and two nine over six windows on the first floor. There was a six over six window with an awning in the peak of the gable end. On the second floor were two nine over six windows and on the first floor was a door and window that was hidden behind a tree trunk. There was a small gable roofed porch with a railing on the gable end. The screening for the door was out and leaning against the door. There was a similar two story gable roof addition at right angle on the back. It had an inside end chimney on the far gable end. Its roof appeared to be older. There were two nine over six windows on the second floor and a similar window on the first floor. It also had a small gable roof porch covering an entry door. Since it was early spring when the photo was taken, the effect is rather stark. The photo illustrates an article by Gerald Sword about Doctor Maddox in Volume 34, No. 8 (August 1986) p. 389-396, Chronicles of St. Mary's. ************************************** Text on verso: in black ball point pen "'Woodly' Maddox's farm house near Jones Crossroads.
