Scope and Content

1 vol. ; 8 3/8"w x 11 3/16"h x 1 1/8"d The authorship of this book is uncertain. The Catalog ... may be a revision by Father John A. Morgan of Father W. P. Tracey's work . A letter of June 19, 1949 from Mr. Beitzell to Father Morgan is inside the front cover of the book saying, "Father Laurence Kelly was kind enough to loan me your catalog [of] S.J. Md. Mission 1634-1806 ...." This copy has a long handwritten preface by Father Morgan. The book as a whole is heavily annotated in Father Morgan's distinctive hand, but there are annotations by someone else, as well [I think Beitzell]. There are letters, prayer cards, sheets of notes, etc. tucked in the book; these will be enumerated below. The book has a charcoal buckram cover with 6 thin gold stripes on the spine spaced about 2" apart. The spine title is "Catalog S.J. MD. Mission 1634-1806." On the inside front cover 4 picture corners offer the opportunity to mount something, but nothing is there. In the very upper left corner of the inside front cover are the initials "EWB" presumably Edwin Warfield Beitzell, but I cannot recognize the writing. Tucked in between the cover and the pages is a 3 sheet letter of June 19, 1949 from Mr. Beitzell to Father Morgan. He wishes he could send a copy of his manuscript to Father Morgan, but he had only 1 copy and that was at Woodstock. He then follows with many suggestions for Father Morgan's Catalog .... In the same location is a letter from Father George S. Rapier of the Marist Seminary in Washington, D.C. seeking Mr. Beitzell's help with the family genealogy. Mr. Beitzell wrote several notes on the back about the appearance of the Rapier name in the Maryland Archives. The pages are un-numbered. The title page title is "Catalog of Members of the Maryland Mission of the Society of Jesus 1634-1806 The next page has PREFACE at the top, but the remainder of the page and the verso is Father Morgan's handwritten material The SOURCES page calls out a "Catalogue of our Missionary Fathers, 1634-1805" and lists the sources consulted to create that catalogue signed by W.P.T. [Is this Father Tracey?] There is a page of abbreviations and a page listing 5 periods of Maryland colonial history, although the final period is primarily the early republic. There are 3 pages of the antecedents to the Maryland Mission from Lord Baltimore's attempt to set up a colony in Avalon to the arrival in St. Mary's City Then begins the list of Fathers, with one page for each year, listing the name and location of each person with date of birth, date of ordination [?] and death date if known. The facing page often has some major historical event listed to give context. Father Morgan made notes in ink, chiefly source notes, where he had something to add. The pencilled notes are probably by Beitzell. Between the pages for 1694 is a sheet of pencil notes in Beitzell's handwriting about Father Gulick. Tucked in the pages for 1742 are 2 sheets of a typed 2 column list of Fathers with their date of arrival in Maryland and a series of symbols to tell where they died. This is followed by a printed copy of a letter from Father Morgan's secretary saying that Father had died on September 30, 1949, had asked to be remembered to everyone and to please pray for him. There is a prayer card for Father Morgan with his photo that shows he was born in 1880, was ordained in 1911, and died in 1949. There is a typed letter from the secretary notifying Mr. Beitzell of Father's death on the day it occurred. She enclosed 2 notebook sheets listing the Maryland fathers--the same information as on the typed sheets. There are 4 sheets with a 2 column list of the Maryland fathers in Mr. Beitzell's handwriting and copied from Father Morgan's list. Between the pages for 1773 is a sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" onionskin with typed information about the Digges family of Prince George's County. This sheet is pasted in place not quite half way down the page and must thus be folded at the bottom. The sheet opposite it was labeled "1773" and was bound into the book, but is not part of the original text. Between the 1790 pages is a newspaper article from The Register, Denver Colorado of January 2, 1949 with a rough portrait of Father John Carroll and 2 paragraphs about his life. Between the text and the back cover are 3 sheets of mimeographed history of Jesuit farms in southern Maryland and the destruction wrought by various wars. A very detailed record was kept of the Civil War depredations and a bill presented to the War Dept. Only a fraction of the damages was paid. There is a sheet of handwritten Beitzell notes and questions. There is an 11"w x 14"h folded photograph of the monument on Father Morgan's grave--a welcoming Christ figure with the Sacred Heart symbol on his chest.
