Mr. Beitzell published Point Lookout ... in 1972 with the assistance of Kirby Lithography Co. of Washington, D.C.
Folder 1: Book orders. A letter of August 30, 1972, indicates Mr. Beitzell had his copies in hand to send out, but the next order in the folder is dated December 27, 1973. A 25 page list those who purchased the 2nd printing lists 1065 available copies for sale and begins in May of 1976 [only samples retained]. A record he maintained of running totals of books sold and money earned shows the sale of 954 copies by August 5, 1983. There is also a 2 page list of places he put the book on consignment. There is an order for a printing in August 1978 of 500 copies. 2 letters of 1979 discuss the discount allowed to book sellers. An order for 750 copies was invoiced by Kirby Lithography on June 28, 1983 and Mr. Beitzell began a new running total sheet for the "3rd print 800 copies" on June 21, 1983. The last sale recorded is September 3, 1984, at which time 142 copies had been sold. The next group of letters is from 1983 and 1984. The book has continued to be a strong seller here at the Historical Society.
Folder 2: Correspondence. This folder includes a set of catalog cards for the book and a duplicate of the Application for Registration of a Claim to Copyright that indicates the book was published in September, 1972. This conflicts with the first letter in Folder 1. Some of the order letters include copies of book reviews and others ask for information. There is also a news photo of Governor Hughes receiving a copy of the book.
Folder 3: Research notes for Point Lookout ... There are 10 3"x5" cards with assessment information on Point Lookout and Saint Michael's manor, a typed sheet for Appendix A of the numbers, condition, and disposition of prisoners at the Point, typed portions, with Fenwick annotations, of Henry C. Forman's book on Jamestown and St. Mary's, many sheets of Beitzell's handwritten notes from visits to the Maryland Hall of Records, Library of Congress, and the National Archives, a sheet where Beitzell wrote several versions of the book's title, and more land records, probably in Mr. Fenwick's handwriting.
A copy of the first printing of the book is in this box.Collection
