Description

The title is located in the lower right quadrant: Map of Saint Mary's City : the first capital of Maryland : showing the location of principal lots and buildings of the town and topographical and water features of its site : the former platted from original grants and ancient surveys and the latter made by enlargement of map of the U.S. Geological Survey / James W. Thomas. Copyright Mar. 1st, 1899 by James W. Thomas. 2" = 1/2 mile 20 feet between contours Latitude and longitude are not indicated, but north is indicated in the upper right quadrant. St. Mary's River and St. Inigoes Creek are about in the center of the map. West St. Mary's Manor is on the lower edge, East St. Mary's is on the left edge, Paris and Galloway and Mattapany St. are in the upper left corner and Cross Manor is near the center right. Note in upper left quadrant: "The houses were located by evident ruins or personal testimony. The name on lots shows the owner and where more than one the successive ownership. The roads leading to the city are as now located, but close investigation indicates that they are substantially where first laid out." "6729" stamped in the lower left corner, outside of the map itself. With the map were two 8 1/2" x 11" sheets. One attempted to enlarge the area of the town center so the names were more readable and one is a hand-drawn copy of Henry Forman's map of the location of the chapel.
