Description

3 1'2" x 6" black and white negative of the front elevation of the new Marshall Hall Metropolitan High School in Charles County Maryland. This school was for African-American students. It was a single story brick building with a single chimney, probably with a long center hall. The center section had a gable roof. There were wings at each end with gable roofs at 90 degrees to the center section. Each wing had five tall narrow nine over nine light double-hung windows centered in the space under the gable roofs. The center section had an entry door in the middle, flanked by five double-hung windows with nine over nine lights on each side. There appeared to be another entry door on the end of the building on the left. There were two gable roofed dormers widely spaced on the center roof. To the right of the school building was a two story hipped roof building with five nine over nine light double hung windows centered on the first floor and single windows in the corners of the second floor. There was a failing wire fence around the buildings and a flag pole in the front yard. Whether the school yard is dirt or grass is not apparent. There were some scraggly trees in the area outside the fence. There is no date associated with this negative, nor does the school appear in a web search. There is a Marshall Hall area of Charles County, so perhaps the school was there. No article accompanied this negative. A positive print of the very damaged negative is included. Visible in the image: School, roofs, windows, flagpole, trees, fence, chimneys, porch, handrailing, dormers, roof ventilator
