Description

Black and white 8"h x 10"w photo of Mattapany, a large brick home overlooking the Patuxent River. It is used as Quarters A for the naval base. Text of caption: "Mattapany, overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River, was once the home of Governor Charles Calvert, afterwards Lord Baltimore. The Indian village of the Mattapients was originally located on the site of the present property. Shortly after the landing of the Maryland colonists, King Pantheon presented this plantation to the Jesuits. It is located in St. Mary's County." This view is of the land side of the white painted brick house and one gable end. There are two inside end chimneys above the gable end joined by a pent and a similar set is barely visible on the other end of the house. There are three large windows on the second floor, all with shutters. There are three similar windows on the first floor whose shutters are closed in this photo. There is a covered cellar stair on that wall also. One end of a flat roofed porch is visible behind the house. On the long wall facing the camera, there are five evenly spaced six over six windows with shutters. On the first floor there are two six over six windows with shutters on the left of the center porch and two identical windows on the right. The porch has a flat roof. It is one bay deep and about two bays wide. It is four steps above the ground. There are square corner supports and then two slightly smaller supports just inboard from those. There is a railing. A screen door on the house is barely visible. There is an addition on the right side of the house that is also two stories, but not as tall as the main house and is also set back a couple of feet. There is one visible six over six double hung window with shutters on the addition's second floor and another on the first floor. There are several trees between the camera and the house. ********************************** Text on verso: stamped in black ink "U. S. Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.
