6 1/4"h x 8 5/8"w black and white photographic reproduction on foam core board. This was a very early garage in Mechanicsville. There was a single Texaco gas pump set up on three courses of concrete block. The building was very rough, built of rough-sawn vertical planks. It had a false front above the occupied portion of the building of two steps and a keystone motif with a nearly illegible Firestone sign on the boards above and just to the right of the entry door. There was a small sign projecting from the building between the entry door and the windows on the right. The door was very plain and one step above the ground. On the right was a pair of one over one double hung windows and on the left was a trio of the same type of window. A few feet from the gas pump support was a large metal pipe that supported a metal hanging sign that said "Mechanicsville Garage Firestone [small illegible white letters]." There was a two and a half story gable roof white house next door. On the visible gable end was a Palladian window in the roof peak, a pair of double hung dark shuttered windows on the second floor and a single dark shuttered window on the first floor. There was a lean to addition in the back with a garage door, but its sill was well above ground. A horse or mule was tied to a fence. Details of the front of the house were obscured by trees. Dr. Guyther used this image in an early presentation on the northern part of the county.
