Description

5 3/8"h x 9"w black and white photographic reproduction on foam core board. This was a very early garage in Mechanicsville, presumably midway between two points in the county. The building had been considerably improved since its earlier incarnation. There was siding on the front that gave the impression of brick or embossed block. The keystone false front was outlined in a contrasting color. There was a rather crude bay window below the "Mid-Way Garage" sign. Below that sign was a large peeling banner advertising 8 of something illegible. There were four gas pumps out front for Gulf gasoline with a tall Gulf sign on a white pole. A woman had pulled up to get gas and the proprietor was coming out of the garage space to help her. Her car and another obscured most of the front of the building. There was a two and a half story house and store on the left; it had multiple gables in its roofline. The building was white with contrasting trim on the windows and eaves. In each gable peak there was a Palladian window. On the near gable end on the second floor there were two dark shuttered two over two double hung windows, at least five of the same windows on the street side second floor, and just one similar window on the first floor gable end. There was a hipped porch roof that covered two multi-window bays. In front of the store was a large Coca-Cola sign. Dr. Guyther used this image in an early presentation on the northern part of the county. *********************************************************** Text with image: none
