In the Civil War, Charles B. Wise was a private in the 1st Maryland Infantry (Confederate), a 2d Lieutenant in the 2d Maryland Infantry (Confederate) and functioned as a quartermaster in that unit. He took sick in the summer of 1864 at Petersburg and was hospitalized. He must have recovered because he was a prisoner in war, captured at Hatchers Run, Virginia, was in the Old Capitol prison and then at Johnson's Island prison in Ohio, and took the loyalty oath in June 1865. He was 25 years old at the time and gave his home as Great Mills, Md. The papers include one pay record and two supply requisitions he made as quartermaster.Collection
