Mary, Ruth, and Elizabeth Hebb were born in Saint Mary's County. They moved to Baltimore early in their lives and were educated there. Ellen Ruth, called Ruth, went to Wilmington as a governess and, together with her sisters, later opened and ran a school for young ladies. This series contains considerable information about the financial affairs of the sisters from the purchase of a life insurance policy in 1892 to the final disposition of their assets in 1958. There is information about brokerage activity, properties they owned and/or lived in, their safe deposit box, annuities and legacies of which the ladies were beneficiaries, the Special Agency and Rent accounts administered by Mrs. DuPont, interesting certificates of indebtedness from bank failures during the depression, forms and correspondence from the Equitable Trust Company, who assisted Mrs. DuPont in her management of the ladies' affairs, representative bills, checks, and bank statements, copies of wills and powers of attorney, an elaborate appraisal of the ladies' effects by Charles Wilson Peale, information about the struggle to wind up Elizabeth's affairs after her death and to keep Ruth at home, details of Mrs. DuPont's campaigns of 1946, 1947, 1948, and 1949 to raise money for the maintenance of Miss Ruth. When Miss Ruth died, Mrs. DuPont was faced with the enormous task of disposing of the ladies' personal effects per lists made by the ladies in the 1940s. The last box contains the lengthy record of Miss Ruth's life insurance policy and federal and state and local tax records for Elizabeth and Ruth from the 1920s to the 1940s. Two legal size folders contain information on mortgages assumed by the ladies and also the will of Mary C. Morton, who left a complicated benefit to the ladies.Collection
