3 3/8"h x 4 7/8"w photo of Pleasant Hill near Pomfret in Charles County. It was a two story clapboard house with a dark gable roof and an outside end chimney on each end. The gable roof incorporated a cover for the second story porch. There was a six over six double hung window near the roof peak on the visible gable end. On the second floor there were two large windows with dark shutters and a door to the porch. The porch had solid paneled railings. The first floor porch had a high ceiling and was screened. The house may have had two windows and an entry door; it was difficult to see. A lower two story addition wrapped around the left chimney stack; this addition was both brick and clapboard. There was a window on its gable end, a six over six double hung window with black shutters on its second floor, a small six over six window on the first floor, and an entry door right next to the window. Yet another addition was on the left. This one was full brick with a very steep dark gable roof and an inside end chimney on the gable end. There was a single six over six window on the visible wall. Besides all this, there was a small shed roof addition attached to the main building and the first addition. It had a small window on each side. There was a circular dirt drive in front of the house. There was a group of people out in the yard and a yellow school bus was visible. This was the birthplace of Mother Catherine Spalding, who went to Kentucky as a young girl and subsequently assisted in founding the Sisters of Charity in Nazareth, Kentucky. It was a teaching order and supplied teachers for several southern Maryland schools, such as St. Mary's Academy. Several local women joined the order. This series of photos was of a pilgrimage to Mother Spalding's birthplace.
