Photo 5 3/4"h x 4"w on 6 1/2"h x 4 1/4"w on board of Nell Fenwick. She is facing slightly to the right. This is a full length portrait of a woman dressed in her very best. She is in a backdrop suggesting a garden wall and there are two wrought iron gates with fleur-de-lis spears at the top. She grasps one of the bars with her right hand at about shoulder height. Her left hand hangs straight down and she is holding a purse with metal fittings and a lace handkerchief in the outside pocket. She has on a dark hat with a small brim that is edged in a lighter color and has lace? feathers? curling slightly over the brim. She has probably brown hair that is curled on her forehead, but otherwise pulled out of sight. Her cheek bones seem rather prominent. There is some sort of white material right at the jaw line above a fairly tall spread collar of dark material. This garment may be a redingote. It has long dark set-in sleeves with just a little fullness above the elbow. There is a flared cuff with a small ruffle and two buttons for trim, with lace trim at the edge of the sleeve. The bodice is closely fitted to the waist and then flares slightly over the hip. The sides and back of the garment continue to just below the knee, but in front there is an arch-shaped cut out to show the skirt beneath. There are 18 buttons from the collar to the top of the "arch," and there are several tucks from the the breast down over the hips. The visible skirt appears to be of the same material. There are deep vertical pleats to knee length, then a deep horizontal ruffle and then more vertical pleats to the floor. Her shoes are not visible at all. A large "corsage" is pinned on her left breast--could this be a wedding portrait? A parasol is leaning on one side of the gate. In the space at the bottom of the board it says "Clinedinst Photo Co., Baltimore. Studios, 66 Lexington St., near Charles and 120 & 122 Lexington, cor. Park Ave. This production is from the studio underlined." [The 120 & 122 studio appears to be underlined.]
