Newspaper Clipping about Gwydir CastleEntry/Object ID
2014.013.0205Description
This was an article written by Margaret Hignett and published in a newspaper called the "Western Mail". It covers the topic of older historic homes starting to hit a point of needing repair and of an avenue to amend these homes through a government grant. The grant would allow these historic homes to get the renovations they would need at the caveat of becoming open to the public. In one instance it took an owner twenty-six months before he finally applied for the grant. For another owner, a Julia Lady Raglan went from having lived with her home being open to the public to eventually closing out and returning her home to being private. She spoke of how she was forced to due to taxes, lack of help and security.
For the owner of Gwydir castle Mr. Richard Clegg, it was the exact opposite. He speaks of how easy it was to get staff onboard to help maintain a public destination for tourists. Both him and his children talk of how they lived in a home open to the public and what drives tourists to want to visit the place.
In the bottom right corner of the clipping is an exterior shot of a place called Conway Castle.Collection
