Description

Black and white photograph 3 1/2"h x 3 1/2"w of the interior of Newtown Manor house. This imposing building was a Jesuit residence for many years. This view is of the kitchen. The stove is in the foreground with the teapot on a back burner. The visible surface suggests it is a wood-burning stove. There is a metal backsplash panel and a small shelf above the back of the burner surface with a coffeepot and a cast iron fry pan on it. There is another wall shelf above that with a pan, a small clock, another coffeepot and a ceramic teapot and potholders on the far end. The shelf is covered with checked oilcloth. The entire wall behind the stove is paneled to the ceiling, painted a light color and finished with a darker molding at the ceiling. There is a low door, perhaps to a pantry, in the corner of the room. On the paneling above the shelf is a metal? teapot that holds potholders and also a ceramic? face of a Dutch doll. On the wall between the stove and the pantry door is a dark potholder on a hook. The wall next to the paneling is wallpapered and a large window is partly visible. This is probably a nine over nine window, but with the shade pulled halfway down, it is difficult to be sure. There appears to be a plant pot on the deep windowsill. There is a light fixture hanging from the ceiling that appears to be metal and is probably meant to have at least three bulbs, but only one is visible and one socket is empty. ******************************************* Text on verso: "Picture 47 Newtown Manor house 1954" This photo was on page 14 of Binder 1.
