Oath of allegiance by last Point Lookout prisonersEntry/Object ID
1995.001.1634Description
Sepia tone 8"h x 10"w sheet with an image 5 7/8"h x 9 1/2"w that shows a portion of two photos taken during the ceremony at which the last prisoners at Point Lookout took the oath of allegiance to the United States. It is known from other publications of the photos that the commanding officer of the camp was on the far right and three more men were on the left. Some unknown hand helpfully marked with ink the points of connection between the photos. There was one Bible for each four prisoners. On the right, two men were visible on a raised platform and two clerks sat below them as the oath was administered to the men who stood to the left. There is no key to the identity of the men, nor is the photographer identified.Collection
