Description

Black and white 8"h x 10"w page with a 6 3/4"h x 6 3/4"w reproduction of the right half of two photos taken during the ceremony at which the last prisoners at Point Lookout took the oath of allegiance to the United States. This reproduction was in a book or booklet because there is a substantial caption beneath the photo entitled "The final act of the drama." The caption explained the circumstances of the picture and described the difficulties faced by these soldiers when they returned to their war-torn homes and how their children fought for the flag in the Spanish-American War less than fifty years later. There are four prisoners in this half of the photo; they shared the Bible. The men were all in some semblance of uniform and had their possessions in piles at their feet. On a raised platform were three men. The person who was presumably the commanding officer was seated in a chair. In front of the platform two clerks were seated on benches flanking a small table. There is no key to the identity of the men, nor is the photographer identified.
