Description

3 1/2"h x 3"w black and white photo of the north elevation of the Old Jail before it was renovated. It was used as office space for the County Welfare Board. The building had a hipped roof with an overhang and an inside end brick chimney with a corbel on the right end of the building. There were gutters on the eaves, a downspout on the corner of the building closest to the photographer, and hooks spaced along the edge of the roof. The gutter had broken about in the middle of the north wall and there was a stain on the bottom of the building from water splashing onto the wall. The building was a light colored stucco. There was a two story addition to the back of the building just big enough to accomodate an entrance door on the first floor. On the second floor, there was a six over six double hung window in the center of the addition, a similar window near the junction of the addition and the main building, and a similar window near the front corner of the north wall. On the first floor, there was a six over six double hung window in the center of the addition, an entry door with six small lights and a screen door on the side of the addition, and another six over six double hung window right under the one on the second floor. There were no windows on the first floor north wall. There was untrimmed grass on the back wall of the building, but the north wall was right on the street. Near the left corner of the north wall was a metal sign "St. Mary's County Welfare Board." The electric meter and electric conduit was on the corner by the front of the building. A little of the Courthouse was barely visible in the back left of the photo. ************************************** Text on verso: "St. Mary's County Jail, now offices of Welfare Board 1956"
