Oyster steamer Governor Robert M. McLaneEntry/Object ID
1980.001.0179Description
6 1/2"h x 8 5/8"w sepia tone landscape oriented photo of a Maryland[?] police steamer. If you look closely, you can see a shrouded weapon on a stand behind the man nearest the bow. Robert Hurry at Calvert Marine Museum believes this is the Governor Robert M. Lane oyster steamer. It patrolled contested oyster areas on the Potomac River from 1884 until 1948. Mr. Hurry believes this may be the original configuration of the steamer; it was repainted in 1904 and subsequently burned to the waterline in 1919. It was completely rebuilt at that time. The ship was very handsome with a dark hull and a white superstructure. It appeared to have seven crew cabins and a common area under the wheelhouse. There were davits for three small boats, a single smokestack, and two masts. It had a very large light mounted just in front of the wheelhouse. Sadly, the photo is damaged near the bow of the vessel, so some detail is lost. Mr. Hurry provided more information about the photo that is filed in the mylar enclosure. It is not clear why Mrs. Reaney had this photo.
