The collection is primarily records of the various organizations of school trustees and commissioners from 1854-1884. The contents of individual sheets which were originally folded, bundled, and tied with pink string include resolutions and orders of the commissioners, correspondence of the examiner, financial records of school building expenses, books and supplies, teachers' salaries, payment of the commissioners and others, the overall budget, petitions from the public for the establishment of schools, copies of teachers' examinations for a teaching certificate and one example of student examinations. These papers also include some records from the county Register of Wills, who was responsible for the funds of the schools during the 1850s. There are also some very early records of the Saint Mary's Savings Institution, probably because George Combs, who was Secretary/Treasurer of the Commissioners at one point, was also a founder of that savings bank. There are also records of an estate administration involving Edward Mattingly. It is not clear why that material is in this collection.Collection
