Scope and Content

8 boxes (40") J. Edwin Coad was a well-educated Saint Mary's County farmer. He was born on September 12, 1825 at Cherryfields, the eldest of six children. He was educated at Charlotte Hall School and St. Mary's College in Baltimore, graduating in 1845. He read law with an uncle, but left that in favor of his home farm. He married Ellen Manning in 1847 and had nine children with her. She died in 1875 and Mr. Coad married Mary Allan in 1877, with whom he had three more children. He lived until 1911, a venerable citizen of the county. Mr. Coad was a voluminous correspondent, both with people and newspapers, wrote poetry and stories, was an authority on county history and was active in community affairs. This collection contains many hundreds of letters, stories, news articles and a few photographs There appears to be much that has been lost; the transcription sheets are numbered and there are many missing pages.
