Description

These are three different editorials that Hope photocopied with each having a small tab with a bit of information in the top left corner of the page. The tab has the type of editorial, volume number, page number and date. Charles H. Guyther is notable for being involved with major census fraud during the 1900 census. The first editorial is titled "From An Old Tax Payer". It makes mention of Charles H. Guyther having been charged with making a wager to someone on the road from Hillville to Sandy Bottom that he along with a Mr. Parsons and G. W. L. Buckler would be elected as commissioners. Later on the person who wrote in for this editorial contests the claims that Mr. Guyther made a wager and claims the newspaper "The Enterprise" itself was making false claims. The editorial is dated to October 13th, 1887 and unsurprisingly the author was G. W. L. Buckler. The second editorial is also titled "From An Old Taxpayer" and it covers two of five candidates for the Commissioners' Court. It goes on to mention how the 2nd district had two candidates while Leonardtown had no representation and was ignored. Blame was placed on the town for not finding a candidate for itself. Later on the editorial goes on to mention how good of a commissioner Charles H. Guyther and a Mr. Allston will be for the county. The editorial is dated to November 3rd, 1887. The third and final editorial is like the first one, also a response to the first editorial's claims. This time the author is Charles H. Guyther and he goes on to refute the claims as lies. By the end, he reassures readers by saying he is competent and the correct man to be a commissioner. The editorial is dated to October 13th, 1887.
