Photograph of Wycoller Hall Exterior 3Entry/Object ID
2014.013.0276Description
This is a colored photograph Hope took during her trip to England to see ancestral Cunliffe homes. This shot is of the exterior to Wycoller Hall. in the foreground of this photo is a pathway with stone fences on either side. Beyond that in the background a lone, ruined stone wall can be seen. There is no written information on the back. From coloration in the photo it looks to be from the 1970s.
The estate itself dates back to the late 16th century and was built on the spot of a previous home owned by a Piers Hartley. The previous home had been occupied in 1507. The Cunliffes came into possession of the newer home after Nicholas Cunliffe married Elizabeth Hartley in 1611. The Cunliffes settled entirely at Wycoller in the 1720s after their previous ancestral home had been lost due to debts. Much of the hall survived well into the late 1800s before it started to truly crumble to ruins.Collection
