3 7/8" x 2 3/4" sepia tone photo of Phyllis Clarke, a professional portrait of an African-American woman. Her head was turned toward the camera, but her body was at an angle. Her hair was either short or pulled back. She was wearing earrings. She was not smiling. Her dress was a dark color with leg of mutton sleeves, a stock tie at the neck, and additional material down the front that ended in sort of an apron effect at the waist. The skirt of the dress appeared to be plain. She had on a very long rope of jewelry that was pinned to her bodice, went once around her neck and then was gathered by a clasp of some kind near her waist. She had a ring on the third finger of her right hand; her left hand was not visible. Her left hand held a small book in her lap. She was seated in a light colored wicker chair with three circles in the high back. Her right arm rested on a three legged table with a piece of carpet on it.
