18"h x 24 1/2"w sheet called Improvements and New Partitions--Millison Building. This was the tip of the triangle bounded by Great Mills, MD 235, and Coral Place. What had been space for the Atwood Bus Station was turning into a bakery, a delicatessen, and a small space for the bus stop. A former cafeteria was going to be retail stores. Eddy's Bar, the Greyhound Bus Station and a lunchroom took up the remainder of the space. The planner was trying to squeeze in 50 parking spaces to meet zoning requirements. Oscar Becker prepared the plans dated February 6, 1948 at a scale of 1"=20'.
25"h x 36"w site plan for a shopping center, proposed by Hiram Millison. west of the intersection of MD 235 and Great Mills Road, right at the main gate to the Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center, Since the two roads came together at less than 90 degrees, the property was laid out in a series of arcs. The first small triangle went to Coral Place and had eight shops and two bus stations in it. The next arc showed a gas station, a theater, four shops, and commercial lots. Alleys and walkways were included. The next large arc was outlined in red pencil and perhaps was what was actually being approved. The space included a large commercial lot and a 200 car parking lot, plus a bowling alley and six stores. The words in red pencil "Patuxent Development Co., Inc." was on the large parking lot. The Methodist Church land was across Great Mills Road. One has to think hard to envision what was planned and what is actually in that location in 2018. The St. Mary's County Planning Commission approved the plan on October 8, 1949 over the signatures of M. C. Thompson, Jr. and Tell Nicolet.Collection
