Poems, Robert E. Lee Speeches, and Confederate Defeat at Gettysburg: Newspaper ClippingsEntry/Object ID
2024.001.0023Description
A collection of newspaper clippings, including a rallying speech titled "Retaliation in Pennsylvania." Also included is "Southern Account of the Invasion of Pennsylvania," recalling the Battle of Gettysburg and retreat to Hagerstown. Antietam, Cumberland, Chambersburg, Carlisle, Greencastle, Harrisburg, also mentioned. The band of 4th Louisiana Brigade was mentioned playing "Dixie" and "Le Marseillaise." The Cumberland Valley faced little resistance from the civilians that lived there, and confederate troops were encouraged to pay for items they "foraged" as plundering or looting was not allowed. A handwritten note states, "Wm R. Bissell was an officer in Pickets division 8th VA under Long & died 1863." There is seemingly no mention of a Wm. R. Bissell in the clippings.Collection
