Description

Sepia tone 3 1/8"h x 3 3/4"w photo of the Point Lookout Prison staff. This is a photograph of an old photograph. The original had faded, especially on the left edge. Thirteen soldiers are striking a pose before a large two story house. The house has a hipped roof, with two interior chimneys at the peak. There is fishscale decoration at the eaves. On the side are two four over four? double hung windows with dark shutters. On the front are three pairs of double hung windows with dark shutters. There is a one story addition on the left with a single six over six double hung window with dark shutters visible. There is a window on the first floor side of the house, but all openings on the front are obscured by a four? bay porch with fishscale decoration at the eaves. There are three large poles in front of the house, but their use is not apparent. Mr. Fenwick's text on the page: "The keepers of Point Lookout prison, Brigadier-Gen. James Barnes and staff. Dr. A. Heger--Medical Director, Capt. C. H. Drew--Asst. Adj.-Gen., Capt. H. E. Goodwin--Asst. Quartermaster, Lieut. H. C. Strong--Asst. Quartermaster, Brig. Gen. James Barnes--Commander St. Mary's Dist., Major A. G. Brady--Provost Marshal, Dr. T. H. Thompson--Surgeon, Capt. J. W. Welch--Ordnance, Lieut. Wilson--Aide-de-Camp, Lieut J. T. Cantwell, Engineer." In counting across the row of men, not all are identified, especially the two gentlemen just visible in the back. ******************************************* Text on verso: "Picture 187[A] Pt. Lookout Prison staff" This photo was on page 64 of Binder 1.
